The Wimborne Dementia Friendly Community (WDFC) has been raising awareness of Dementia across the town since 2013. We aim to ensure that the voices of people living with dementia, their carers and their families are heard.
We are a very active steering committee with 16 members: Chair (Sue Tipping), Secretary (Carol Bruton), Treasurer (Kerry Hay) and representatives from In Jolly Good Company, Douch Family Funeral Directors, Prama, Aster Connected Living, Oakley Friends, Wimborne BID, Museum of East Dorset, Wimborne Minster, Streets Meadow. We now meet approximately every 6 weeks and oversee the dementia friendly activities in and around the town.
We organise Dementia Awareness Training 3 times a year, which anyone with an interest in Dementia is welcome to attend. We support Step Outside, a gardening project at Kingston Lacy and Jolly Days, which take place at MED and Wimborne St Giles. These are an opportunity for those living with dementia and their carers to meet and join in activities such as music, art and crafts in a safe and friendly environment. We are also involved in Oakley Friends – a weekly course for carers held at the Canford Magna Centre. We take every opportunity to raise awareness of dementia such as attending Council meetings, breakfast networking sessions and having publicity stalls at appropriate gatherings.
We are also part of the steering committee for the ‘Living Well’ community magazine, printed 3 times a year. Signposting people to What’s on in their town and organisations able to offer help and support in the local community.
